Creating calm for your cat during the festive season

In this blog I share how to keep your cat calm during the festive season with emotional support, energy awareness, and simple practical tips from a holistic perspective.

The festive season can feel chaotic – for your cat, too

As the festive season rolls in, our homes naturally begin to feel different. Routines change, decorations appear, visitors arrive, and our emotional energy often shifts with the pressures of the season. While some cats adapt easily, many become unsettled, not just because of environmental changes, but because they deeply absorb and respond to the energy in the home.

If your cat becomes more jumpy, withdrawn, over-stimulated, or clingier during this time, they may not be “acting out” … they may be signalling an emotional or energetic disturbance.

The good news? You can support them with calm, grounding, and heart-led reassurance throughout the season.

Create calm spaces that ground their energy

During the festive season, there are often changes in a cat’s physical environment. Furniture may be rearranged to make space for a tree, noisy items may be introduced, or there may simply be more people moving around.

Your cat’s root chakra, which is linked to safety and stability, is especially sensitive during periods of change. One of the simplest ways to support this energy centre is by creating dedicated safe spaces to help your cat feel safe and secur

✅ Offer quiet hiding spots or cosy nooks with blankets
✅ Maintain familiar scents (e.g. their bed, toys, or a piece of your clothing)
✅ Keep their food, water, and litter tray in predictable locations
✅ Create a “retreat zone” where no guests are allowed

These grounded, familiar spaces help stabilise your cat’s sense of safety, making it easier for them to regulate emotionally when the outside world feels busy.

When your cat feels unsafe or unsettled, it’s often their root chakra (connected with the colour red) calling for balance and reassurance.

To understand how each of your cat’s chakras influences their emotions and behaviour, and how to support them through seasonal shifts explore my book Cat Chakras:

Stay present – your energy sets the tone

I don’t know about you, but I have mixed emotions about the festive season. Whilst I love a good Christmas film, blankie and hot chocolate, I also feel quite stressed worrying if the gifts I have shared will be welcome. Or if we will have celebratory fireworks going off around the neighbourhood. Cats are highly intuitive and often respond to their guardian’s emotional and energetic state.

If you are anxious, rushed, or overwhelmed, your cat may become unbalanced too.

Supporting yourself is one of the most powerful ways to support your cat.

💞 Take a few slow breaths before interacting with them
💞 Sit quietly beside them with calm intention
💞 Speak softly and move gently around the home
💞 Engage in grounding rituals that bring peace into your own body

Even a few minutes of mindful connection each day helps regulate your cat’s heart chakra, allowing them to feel emotionally safe and connected with you through consistency and love.

When you feel safe and secure, so does your cat. Trust me … Leo has shown me repeatedly over the years that my current state affects us all in the home!

Use calming energetic supports (that make practical sense too)

Festive triggers such as fireworks, visitors, new smells, and unfamiliar sounds can heighten your cat’s stress response. Practical supports can also carry an energetic influence when intentionally chosen.

Gentle play sessions encourage movement, release built-up tension, and help circulate energy through the chakras
Slow stroking along the spine can help clear their aura and align their energy field
Using soft colours around the home (especially greens and pinks linked to the heart chakra) promotes emotional calm
Maintaining consistent mealtime routines supports the sacral and root chakras through stability and reassurance

Employing a few of these small but intentional acts offer security, reduce emotional spikes, and help your feline friend stay balanced during the busy days ahead.

And finally, don’t be afraid to inform guests or visitors how they can help and support your cat if/when they come to visit.

Give your cat a voice and share how they can feel safe, seen and heard at this time of year.

Happy festive season to you all and thank you for being part of the Naturally Cats community.

With love,
