Is it OK to leave my cat alone for a few days?
Wondering if it’s safe to leave your cat alone for a few days? Learn how long is too long, when your cat needs a sitter, and how to keep them safe, comfortable and happy while you’re away.
In this blog we look at why your cat is so stressed out and how you can help them to feel better.Â
Cats are predator and prey animals so it can take them a while to feel settled and at ease in their environment. Sure there are some cats who roll over and show their tummy wherever they go! But for others they need to be alert in their surroundings to monitor for danger or threats.
There are many aspects to a cat and being alert and managing their environment is only one part of a cats day to day existence. The other part I wanted to talk about is their energy.
You know what I mean by energy, when you spend time with people you love you leave them feeling a little high and happy. And of course there are other people who drain your energy and leave you feeling overwhelmed, tired and a little grumpy.
A cat has energetic needs too. Let me tell you about their root chakra. If you aren’t sure what a root chakra is, be sure to check out my YouTube video WHAT CHAKRAS DO CATS HAVE.

The root chakra is found at the base of the spine where the tail joins the body. Cats also have mini root chakras at the bottom of their feet where they are connected with the earth.
When a cat is ungrounded (just like us humans) they are jumpy, hypervigilant, on edge, anxious, in fight/flight mode, withdrawn and perhaps even aggressive.
They are literally in survival mode. Â
They don’t feel safe and secure in their environment and may shut down emotionally. They can withdraw from human contact and interaction and will show a decreased appetite.

There are some really simple, yet powerful ways that you can support your cat’s root chakra. My favourite is colour therapy. This is when you put down coloured items of the 7 main chakra colours and allow your cat to choose which colour to work with to support the unique parts of their energy system.
For a more detailed explanation of colour therapy see my YouTube video: HOW TO USE COLOUR THERAPY WITH CATS.
Here you can see Baby Max enjoying the red fabric we have down in our home. When using colour therapy only put 2-3 colours together in one place.
Don’t put them on existing cat beds, near food stations or litter trays.
Cats that have access to colour therapy will use it as and when they need to. Don’t panic if you put down colour and your cat doesn’t immediate go to use it. Remember what I said at the beginning – some cats take a while to settle into changes in their environment.
It doesn’t matter if your cat sits, steps, or lays on the colour. A moment, a minute or an hour – your cat is doing what they need to heal. Trust them.
