Is it OK to leave my cat alone for a few days?
Wondering if it’s safe to leave your cat alone for a few days? Learn how long is too long, when your cat needs a sitter, and how to keep them safe, comfortable and happy while you’re away.
Some days our cats feel a little further away: staring into space, a little on edge, or suddenly disinterested. If that’s you and your feline friend right now, take a breath. The space you’re feeling isn’t rejection it’s information. Your cat is exquisitely tuned to your field. When your nervous system is tight, your cat often shows you where the harmony has slipped. That’s not a failure; it’s an invitation back to connection.
Recently Leo has been doing just that! Although his tool of choice to get me to pay attention is his eating habits. It sends me into SUCH a spiral of doubt, worry, fear and anxiety.
Your cat reads you beyond words through rhythm, body, breath, and intention. When our energy is scattered or heavy, sensitive cats may:
🐾 Withdraw to higher shelves or hidden nooks
🐾 Flick the tail, flatten ears, or give a quick “love bite” (really a too-much signal)
🐾 Avoid being touched in their usual favourite spots
🐾 Zoom or vocalise at odd hours to discharge build-up
🐾 Guard resources (beds, bowls, doorways) to create control and safety
None of this means you’re “doing it wrong.” It means there’s something to tend to for both you and your cat.
Try these today and notice what shifts over 72 hours:
Calm connection (2 minutes)
Place a hand on your heart and one on your lower belly. Close your eyes and take 3 slow, deep breaths. Allow your body to soften, your breath to steady and release the tension you’ve been holding. Three rounds is enough to change your field.
“I see you” presence (1–3 minutes)
Sit at floor level, turn your body slightly side-on, soften your gaze. Let your cat come to you or simply witness them without agenda. Mirror one slow blink. That’s all.
🐾 If they approach, offer a finger to the air and wait for them to close the gap.
🐾 If they stay put, you are still connected, silence counts.
Micro-choice enrichment (2 minutes)
Offer two options: two colours, two herbs, two brush types, or two play lures briefly. Choice builds safety and reduces pressure. It helps your cat to know they have autonomy and to see that you recognise them as a sentient being in their own right.
When you start to focus on shifting the energy in the home your cat will give you a sign to share they can feel it. They may start to engage more with you, eat a little better or look for more physical contact.
Know that when you shift your energy it can take a moment for your cat to feel it. I spent the day journaling recently and along with that came a little crying – it was such a relief. The next day Leo cleared four plates of food!! FOUR! I’d been struggling to get a complete plate into him over the course of a day before that.
Be patient and allow your cat the grace to feel into your shifted energy field.
If your cat’s behaviours feel layered, perhaps they are resource guarding, over-grooming or showing startled responses, there’s usually a story in both of your energy fields. That’s exactly what we explore in the Become a soul led cat guardian programme.
We work on creating a sustainable way for you and your cat to come together so harmony becomes a way of living, not a trick you have to keep remembering.
